Well, Confident Kids is that place! Confident Kids is a Bible based support group program offering a life skills curriculum that helps families with children ages 4 - 12 years old deal with the stresses of living in today's world. Through games, skits and small group discussions, children learn important life skills while experiencing a safe place to talk about their life experiences. In a concurrent group, parents learn to apply these same skills at home, while experiencing a safe place to share their stories, as well. In both groups, participants grow as they discover they are not alone in their pain.
Our HistoryConfident Kids is a national organization that has been promoting Christian support-groups for children and families since 1990. The program was actually written a number of years earlier by Linda Kondracki Sibley, a children's pastor in Southern California. For some time, Linda had been searching for a resource that would address the needs of the increasing number of children in her church and community who were struggling with highly stressful issues such as divorce, stepfamilies, alcoholic parents, and a host of other issues. Finding no such resource available, she began to write one of her own. As the program was being developed, word of its existence spread and soon Linda had numerous families on a waiting list, eager to be involved. The end result was that she left her church position and began a faith endeavor to make the Confident Kids program available to churches across the country. Today, from our headquarters on the central coast of California, our mission is to equip Christian leaders to effectively minister to today's hurting kids and struggling parents by training them to start and run a Confident Kids program through their own church or other Christian organization. Linda Sibley holds a Master of Arts Degree in Christian Education and Pastoral Care from Bethel Theological Seminary (St. Paul, MN), and has served more than 20 years ministering to children and families through churches in both Minnesota and California. She has been a contributing editor for David C. Cook Publishing Company, writing numerous pieces of Sunday School curriculum and VBS programs. She has written Sunday School curriculum for Standard Publishing, which has also published four units of the Confident Kids curriculum. Linda has also been a contributing editor to Christian Parenting Today magazine, and is the author of the Guides for Growing A Healthy Family Book Series, published by Baker Book House.
The Goals of the Confident Kids ProgramConfident Kids support groups are designed to do the following:
The Confident Kids Program goals are accomplished through three program elements, which work together to accomplish the program goals:
1. A Life Skills Curriculum. The Confident Kids curriculum teaches children a core set of healthy living skills needed to understand and cope with their life situations. 2. A Support Group Environment. Confident Kids leaders are carefully trained to teach the curriculum in an environment which is emotionally safe and conducive to helping kids work through their life experiences. 3. A Concurrent Parents' Group. Through the parents' group, the entire family system is impacted as parents and kids are learning and growing together.
Scriptural FoundationsConfident Kids seeks to help kids who are in danger of disconnecting from God, find Him as a personal friend and source of strength in the midst of their life experiences. The session plans include carefully selected Bible stories, memory verses, and small group prayer times to communicate four Scriptural truths.
The Addition of the Kids Like Me! ProgramIn August of 2003, a new curriculum was published by Confident Kids Support Groups. This new curriculum, called Kids Like Me!, is a new, complete program written especially to meet the needs of children living in chemically dependent families. With the addition of Kids Like Me!, Confident Kids Support Groups (the organization) now has two distinctive support group curriculums available to churches and other Christian organizations.
